On our last trip in febrero, we were invited to the wedding of our cousin Santi and we decided we’re going 100%. The plan is Buenos Aires to Calafate to El Chalten then back to BA and Lujan for the wedding.
Arrived in BA and picked up by our cousin Vic. We spent a day chilling out in BA visiting a few places we had never been to before and prepping for our flight to Calafate.

From BA we flew south to Calafate, Santa Cruz province.
Next we took transport from Calafate to visit Parque Nacional Los Glaciares.
From Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, we took a 2.5 hour transport north to El Chalten, located in the heart of the Patagonia and near Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy.
Exploring trails and crags surrounding El Chalten.
Those warm ups prepared us for hike to Laguna de los Tres, a 20km round trip but well worth the effort to gain a close up look at Fitz Roy.
Although cloudy most of the way up, on the hike out we got some clear views of the massif.
Even in the best of conditions, much of the climbing in this region is suitable only for serious Hardmen and Hardwomen. Just to give you an idea, here is the recent story of the first and most proud winter send by a true Patagonian Hardman, Colin Haley
However, even for softies like me, there is a lifetime of climbing minutes from El Chalten on surrounding crags.
And yes, you can clip bolts. Two great online resources for route information are The Crag and Mountain project.
Time to return from Patagonia to Santi’s wedding…
